Signs of our Lives is a book presenting the artisanal craft of hand painted business signage across Perth, Western Australia. The book showcases the vibrant colours and techniques of lettering and typography across mechanics, milk bars and fresh produce markets.

The advent of digitally produced vinyl signage that took off in the 90s and 2000s changed the design landscape from traditional artistic skills to time-bound productivity and efficiency. This new way of making signs diminished the prominence of high craft hand-painted lettering, gold leaf and associated detailed works.

In recent times, the production of hand-crafted signage has taken a resurgence for businesses and brands, both big and small looking for an authentic feel to their public image. This book is one of several publications, movies, workshops and groups that have spurred from the general public's interest in beautiful lettering. Lettering and finely crafted business signage have allowed major stores and brands like Typo and Kikki K to democratise lettering and typography in products to a mass audience. (

Designer and creative Jourdan Sungkar began working on Signs of our Lives  in 2012, while resiging in Perth. The book has only existed in 3 copies and is now available to the public to purchase in a bespoke number of 200 copies. 

People for appreciation of design, traditional artisanal craft, aesthetics, pop culture, and marketing would all benefit from this vibrant collection of beautiful signs.
